It's not often fans of Max Muay Thai get to see two non-Thais go to war on the Sunday night Ultimate show. But this past Sunday, that's exactly what fans got.
Samuel Gough from England went head-to-head with Colten Bird from Canada. Gough, who is usually the taller of the two fighters, had to make adjustments in the first round to deal with the taller Bird. And Bird, being away from Max for almost a year, had to get used to forward effective style that Max referees and judges look for.
But going into the second round it seemed both fighters made those adjustments, and what followed was fight of the night, if not fight of the year.
The English fighter pressed forward, landing body kicks and punches on the Canadian. In response, the Canadian shot elbows from close range. Bird opened up a cut on the hairline of Gough and the blood never stopped flowing.
After the referee called a halt to the action to have the ringside doctor inspect the damage, Gough, who has been cut before at Max, welcomed the elbows and continued to press forward.
In the end, it was the kicks and knees of Gough that got him one of his toughest earned victories to date.
